Not Just a Piece of Cloth

Anshu Gupta is the founder of Goonj, a volunteer-run recycling center in New Delhi. Anshu shows how Goonj recycles garments to provide clothes, schoolbags, sanitary napkins and other amenities for India’s poor.

Anshu offers a heartfelt appeal to be mindful of the unused clothing taking space in your closet right now, and what a treasure it could be for someone in need.

Anshu Gupta is an Ashoka Fellow and the executive director of Goonj, a primarily volunteer run organization based in New Delhi that provides clothes and other basic amenities to millions across India by turning one person's waste into a resource for another. In 1998 Anshu left his job as a manager of corporate communications in a large Indian company to found Goonj and travel India in order to understand the needs of the people of his country. Ms.B.Bhagya Lakshmi aged 34 years is W/o B.Maddaiah of Nannur village of Orvakal Mandal of Kurnool District, A.P. She got marriage in the year 1986 with Maddaiah by giving Rs.1116/-as dowry. Her husband is not doing any work. She has been going for agriculture labour work to feed. Her husband used to harass her by abusing and beating. She attempted for suicide by consuming sleeping tablets. In the year 1988, her brother Mr.Shiva Shankar has taken her and kept in his house. She has no children. She was in the hospital and bed rest for about 2 years. When she was in the hospital, her husband married another woman. But, she is not yet divorced. She wants to live on her own legs.
